Mackerel Sustainability Update
The UK Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has put Mackerel from British and European stocks back on its approved eating list. This recognises the UK, European and Norwegian conservation initiatives to maintain a healthy stock, and reverses the earlier downgrade in January. The updated status sets out that consumers can eat the fish occasionally without risk to the species.
The same however does not apply to the Icelandic and Faroese mackerel catch. The huge quota increases that these countries arbitrarily allocated to themselves in 2012 have no recognised basis for sustainability and remain a cause for concern. It is, as a result, a source of on-going discord with these nations.
